GO, GOVERNOR-GENERAL

-

At 90, I am still a regular reader of your magazine, which has improved on all fronts over the past few years. The article on new Governor-General Patsy Reddy (“Reddy steady go”, December 24) was most absorbing.

As our 21st GovernorGeneral – I have lived under at least 12 – she is patron of numerous religious, social and cultural organisations, and a role model for future aspiring vice-regal representatives. So it was disappointing to learn that she married her partner of 29 years only on receiving her vice-regal appointment.

She appears to be akin in her morals to our new Prime Minister, who agrees with same-sex marriage, contrary to the tenets of his religion.

No doubt Reddy, who is of humble origins and a highly successful barrister, will make a good representative of the Queen and maintain the accepted moral and civic leadership. I wish her, her distinguished husband, and poodle well. Thomas J Packer (Christchurch Central)
