BARDEN’S CHESS PROBLEMS

-

Simon Williams v Alina l’Ami, Amsterdam 2014

Williams (White, to play) has built a reputation as England’s most imaginative attacking grandmaster, but he failed to solve today’s puzzle. He went 2 Nf5+?, which looks promising but only led to a draw by perpetual check after gxf5 2 Qe7+ Kh8 3 Qf6+ Kh7 4 Bxf5+ Kg8 and White does not have a forced mate while his own king threatened with immediate death by Qxg2. There is a winning white move in the diagram, however. Can you find it?

CN838: 1 Bf8+! If Kxf8 2 Qf6+ Ke8 3 Qf7+ Kd8 4 Qd7 mate. If Rxf8 2 Qe7+ Kh8 3 Qxf8+ Kh7 4 Qg8 mate.
