Fu­ture world cham­pion Carlsen here met a Chi­nese op­po­nent who at one time was the youngest-ever grand­mas­ter but missed out on the top 20. Carlsen, as of­ten, went for a small endgame edge where he kept pos­ing small prob­lems for the de­fence un­til Bu fi­nally erred. The Bei­jing GM still hoped to halve out here as his rook and bishop seem to con­tain Carlsen’s pawns. But the Nor­we­gian had seen fur­ther. One move, and Black re­signed.
