Raft-making

Logs coming down the tramway are dumped at tidal water near Thames and assembled into rafts of 200 logs. Raft-making is done on contract. Each log is drilled on one end and a chain slipped through to attach it to the main tow rope. A large paddle steamer tug boat takes two days to tow these rafts to Auckland.*
