THE LOVE AFFAIR

- & PHOTOS: CORY WORDS

WE SPEND OUR SURFING LIVES IMMERSED IN THE THRILL OF THE CHASE.

Thousands of hours dedicated to chasing down the perfect wave. Some travel far and wide across all seven seas playing the field, searching. Others dedicate their lives to one particular beauty, that dedication consumes them, twists their simple judgement and drives up a barrier between them, their jobs, and their loved ones.

They call it ‘A Love Affair’. It’s kinda funny how for centuries boats have been named after women, many theories exist as to why, but none can cement the actual reasoning. So with that it should only be fair that lineups across the world be seen as a feminine form. After all, their beauty leaves

one in awe, her form as perfect as one could ever imagine. She seduces and teases, showing only enough to make you want more. Every so often she may lead you to the dance floor, and just when you think you’re in, she walks away. Not to be seen again, until

only when she feels the time is right for her.

There is no bargaining, you are under her spell. You lose sleep worrying if she will ever show again, and spend countless hours sitting

by the phone tirelessly waiting for her booty call. Many men will admire, some accept that she is out of their league, yet the brave, brash and confident will try their luck. Like a mating ritual from a National Geographic documentary, they will show looking their best, in prime condition, puffed up and beating their chests, going head to head against other contenders to win her over, only to go

home beaten and bruised.

Knowing they can’t have her makes them want her more. In weak moments some may stray and cheat elsewhere, naturally needing to feel loved. But she will sense this, as only a woman can, and slap you

down, returning you to the shore picking up the pieces, literally. Those that display loyalty, commitment and dedication, the traits that all women admire, will prosper, but only if she allows. Only then will

she allow a select few to ride her.

We dedicate this spread to a few that dedicated themselves to ‘The Love Affair’. Who lost sleep, skin, blood, and boards. Were wind burnt, sat cold and wet for days on end waiting. Spent weeks in the ‘dog box’

and burnt thousands of litres of petrol.

ALL FOR THAT ONE CHANCE, THE CHANCE TO RIDE, INSIDE!
