INTRODUCING DANIEL WHISTON

-

WE’RE RESERVING THIS SPOT FOR THOSE LOCAL GUYS & GIRLS THAT ADORN SURF SPOTS THE LENGTH OF AOTEAROA, LIVING FOR THE PURITY AND STOKE OF EACH AND EVERY SURF AT THEIR LOCAL. THEY DON’T CHASE THE LIMELIGHT, NOR REALLY CARE WHAT IS GOING ON AMONGST THE WORLD SURFING SCENE. THEY’RE JUST SURFING FOR THE LOVE OF IT, WHENEVER THEY CAN. THIS ISSUE WE’RE INTRODUCING TARANAKI’S DANIEL WHISTON.

Age: 33 Nicknames: Manus, Baz or Whisto. Relationship/family at all? Two awesome boys, Luke six years, and Ryder four months, and my amazing partner Lilly. Where do you live? Rahotu, Surf Highway 45.

Where, when and how did you first get into surfing? I grew up in Waiuku, mainly surfed the dunny bowl and a few spots near by, I can’t give to much away!!! My dad has always surfed and he used to permit me bunking school and we would go on various missions together.. I was 16 or so when I truly developed a passion for surfing.. And now I’m just frothed to get amongst as much as time permits.

Favourite place to surf? Stent and the Patch. Travel? Yeah love to travel and have been very fortu- nate and have met some of my best friends travelling. Covered most of Aotearoa, France, Spain, Morocco, California a bunch of times, Mexico, Indo, Auzzie, Fiji and Samoa... Yep travel is all time... Should be made compulsory with government funding!

Your perfect surf session? Six foot throating lefts in the Far North with me good mate Baz, aka Lonny. Shot bro.

Your stance on localism? Locals Rule, they surf in all conditions and lay in wait for those golden days that come around from time to time. I don’t see myself as a local to the spots around here, but I think if you act in a fashion that is respectful you can always get waves and the locals will usually share their jewels... I got told out at Stent quite some time ago, so I had to eat shit and learn a lesson.

Other interests? Right into my fishing at the moment, loving that.

Occupation: Paramedic on Blue Watch? based in New Plymouth.

Life Highlight? Ah man so many, kids, my girl Lilly... True friends... Surviving Bali Bombings 2002, Assisting in Samoa post Tsunami... and living here in Taranaki.

Fave beer? Corona. Rugby or League? Rugby... Andrew Hore showed ‘em!

Final word: If I may, a huge word to me ol’ mate Noah Litz shaping Wavetools NZ, doing an amazing job... people should check him out! Shot Noah.
