Videography

Turn your key moments (and many more besides) into your very own romantic movie that doesn’t miss a beat.

- PHOTOGRAPHY ANTONY NOBILO

A wedding video is like a living memory of what will be an unforgettable day. And with new and creative approaches to wedding videography on the rise, couples now have solid options for recording their celebrations.

Many wedding videographers now favour a documentary approach – like a short and sweet TV doco. Or to really bring your story to life, some videographers will go beyond immediate bridal party and family, sourcing sound bites from the likes of the celebrant and cake maker.

It’s important to discuss with your videographer who and what will be filmed. It’s the people who make the day one in a million, and the finished product should reflect this.

To find out whether a videographer has what it takes, view samples of their work. Ask to see full-length examples, rather than just a compilation of their best shots, to give you a clear indication of how skilled they are and whether they’ll be able to capture the true essence and emotion of your day.

Check the lighting, that the sound is clear and that the music or background noise isn’t overpowering. And make sure you choose a professional who will barely be noticed. They should be efficient yet unobtrusive.

It’s common to have two camera operators on the day: one to film the bride’s preparations and the other to capture the groom’s pre-wedding rituals. This dual approach also works well at the ceremony, where one camera can be trained on the guests arriving while the other focuses on the finer details of the procession. Bonus: you’ll get footage of both your entrance, plus your groom’s face as you make your debut.

For something different, choose an original display such as a stop- motion video, where still photos are run together for quirky effect.

Finally, it is essential to ensure your videographer’s equipment is up to a professional standard so that audio is clear and precise. For example, ask whether the camera operator will be using the appropriate wireless lapel microphones when necessary. W
