Where do you start when choosing a wedding venue?

What are key things to keep in mind when considerin­g the size of your venue?

Ask what the venue will look like with your chosen number of guests inside – at Auckland Museum, we can cater for up to 400 seated guests in the Event Centre, and up to 120 in the Grand Foyer. These numbers include space for a dance floor, but be sure to clarify with your chosen venue that this is the case.

When should you aim to book by?

As soon as possible. Not only do popular venues book up well in advance, but every aspect of your wedding revolves around your date – the sooner you set it the better.

What are key ways you can save when choosing a venue?

Choosing an off-season or non-Saturday date. Additional­ly, look for a venue that can cater for both your ceremony and reception – you’ll save on transport, and decoration­s will be easier to transfer.

Would you recommend finding a venue with catering included?

Yes. An experience­d catering company working within a space they are familiar with will minimise risks around food service and quality.

Is there a way to set up a reception so it encourages guest interactio­n?

Seating is key – tables should seat eight to 10 guests maximum, because larger tables make it difficult for guests to converse. Dessert stations around the room enable further mingling, especially when it’s time for guests to get up and dance later in the evening.

What are your top tips for a smoothrunn­ing day?

Work with a single point of contact at your chosen venue, listen to their advice, write everything down and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Delegating tasks to key people will reduce your own stress and workload. Lastly, keep perspectiv­e and try not to sweat the small stuff !
