No bride wants to have a bad-hair day on her big day. Take heed from the pros, with these words of wisdom

-

perfect preparation

When your hair is in good condition, you don’t need to work hard to make it do the things you want. Using products that are specific for your hair type, condition and colour will mean it’ll take less time to achieve those amazing results.

If you book a consultation or mention your wedding during your next salon visit, your stylist can recommend exactly what your hair needs for you to achieve your dream ‘do, such as moisture or strength. Your stylist can then tailor an at-home haircare programme that makes it easy to get your hair in great condition, fast! Clare Whitworth – Rodney Wayne South City

(Christchurch) Ensure your colour is done a week to 10 days prior to the event. At this point, make no drastic changes to your style – any experimenting should start at least a year ahead of the big day.

Barb Ryan – Servilles Academy (Auckland) Most people grow their hair for their big day, but they don’t trim it enough during that period. This leaves the hair thin and brittle – which never looks nice. I would recommend getting a trim every six to eight weeks if you’re maintaining length, and eight to 10 weeks if you’re growing length. It will still get longer, and it will be much fuller and healthier-looking.

Don’t try to do something that’s not you. Some brides have crazy ideas of up-dos even though they never wear their hair up, so they end up with a style that’s not them. If you’re keen on an up-do, make sure it still looks like ‘you’. Consider having your hair done in a version of what you’d normally wear when you’re dressing up.

Realise that your wedding day is the day you want to be your most beautiful you. But don’t just do something that you want – think about what your husband-to-be might like. And don’t forget, you’ll be looking at the photos for many years to come.

(Wellington) Having a trial is a huge must-do because sometimes you’ll discover a style you wouldn’t have thought would suit you actually looks really good. We normally do a consultation first to talk through ideas, then have a trial. After the trial, take a photo of your hairstyle from a variety of different angles, and reference it when selecting accessories.

Clare Whitworth Make sure you consider your gown’s neckline. If your dress is one shouldered, try a hairstyle pulled to the opposite side. V necklines look great with your hair up, as this will elongate your neck. You also need to consider your face shape and hair type.
