Stay in a swanky resort, or quiz the locals when you arrive − there are ‘casas particulares’ (government-registered private homes) scattered throughout the country, for a truly authentic experience.

INSIDER TIP Don’t buy cigars on the street. If you want to try a quality Cuban cigar, buy one from a government-endorsed store. These are identifiable by their air conditioning, which isn’t just to keep you cool, it also helps preserve the tobacco.
