A relaxed APPROACH

Fresh spring styles and a whimsi-cool softness for bridal hair. We couldn’t be more in love.

Brides are opting for soft draped hair, deconstructed buns and relaxed waves – think pulled out twists and braids.

Brides around the globe are swept up in this casual yet considered bridal hair trend, and it’s easy to see why. The romance of layered, loose and voluminous waves finished with a dainty hair piece or a finespun lace veil: it’s an approach that works well for all seasons, and with a little help from the experts, can be prettily pulled off by almost anyone.

CARE FACTOR

Looking after your hair is key to getting away with a relaxed bridal hairstyle, and to ensuring the finished look appears more ‘bohemian’ than ‘just-jumpedout-of-bed’. Jo Plant of Exile Hair Design suggests speaking with your stylist well in advance of the big day, as even the most damaged strands can be resurrected. “There are some beautiful hair repair products available, and a good stylist will assess your hair and prescribe the right formula for you. Regular trims, nourishing treatments, and possibly a semi-permanent colour to enhance a natural look (and to add shine) will all contribute to a final appearance you’ll love.

VOLUME CONTROL

“Messy volume has certainly been upstaged by this relaxed movement,” agrees Joico Bridal Hair Stylist of The Year winner Robyn Munro. “Many brides are opting for soft draped hair, deconstructed buns and relaxed waves – think pulled- out twists and braids as well as brushed- out waves rather than separated curls. “Heavy hairspray has been banished from my kit and replaced with volume and shine sprays.”

WARM UP

Hands down the most talked about hair colours of the moment are in line with the Danish interior trend of hygee (pronounced hoo-gah), a word which captures the art of creating cosy, relaxed spaces in your home with purpose, textures, and tones. Hygee hair is all about comfort

and pretty warmth – think wavy locks and tones such as soft coppers, rich browns, buttery blondes, and vibrant red. “Balayage colour techniques have really added to the layer of contrast to create a natural, lived-in texture,” says Robyn.

STAY TRUE TO YOU

If you see a colourist regularly, or intend to colour your locks in the lead-up to your wedding, be sure to begin planning about 18 months from W- day. “Stay true to yourself,” suggests Kérastase National education manager Gilda Wilson. “If you have always had a hair colour you love, keep it, because that’s you.” Gilda suggests having regular treatments to get or keep your hair in optimum condition. And the latest in at-home colour – Kérastase Reflection Chromatique, a direct dye for neutralising tones or reviving colour in between salon visits – will keep your just-hitched hue in tip top condition throughout your entire honeymoon as well.

PREP PERFECT

Wash your hair at least a day before your wedding. Hair that’s too clean may make it harder to style. Take some time to give your hair a good condition. Hair guru Richard Kavanagh recommends washing your hair as soon as you get in the shower and to leave your conditioner on to work its magic while you wash the rest of yourself. Richard says a common mistake is not rinsing your hair properly. “If you leave any conditioner in at all, it can make your hair look dull and it makes it harder for your stylist to blowdry and style with hot tools.”

“If you have always had a hair colour you love, keep it, because that’s you!” - Gilda Wilson
