Your regular hairdresser may not be your stylist on your big day

With most brides having at least a year in advance to plan their wedding, it’s a great idea to start the ball rolling early for hair that’s wedding-ready. Your regular hairdresser knows and understands your hair, so their advice will help get your hair to maximum health in time for your big day. With their guidance, this might involve conditioning treatments, investing in good shampoos and discussing colour. Don’t feel there are any hard and fast rules as to what your hair must have; it all depends on your own particular needs.

Although they work wonders on your colour and cut, not all hairdressers have a desire to further their skills in special occasion hair. However in recent years, the need for those specialising in beautiful updos has been recognised, with an increase in professional bridal hair services in New Zealand.

The best access to these specialised stylists is through magazines and social media, or try asking your other vendors for recommendations – they see results of successful bridal hair first-hand.

While researching your styling options, a combined hair and makeup artist can seem like the most efficient choice. However, be aware that if your bridal party has more than three or four people, you’ll need two stylists to allow for time constraints. Choosing two separate professionals can allow for a more well-rounded service, as they are passionate about their respective areas, rather than having to cater for both half-heartedly.

The team that surrounds you when you get ready should be passionate and armed with a wealth of knowledge in order to be able to dream up, as well as execute, your desired look.
