SETTING THE SCENE

Once you’ve settled on an event location, let its beauty and surrounds set the tone for your style and decoration.

Let your venue inform the tone of your day

Taking inspiration from the surreal surrounds of Castle Hill’s grand limestone rocks – located between Darfield and Arthur’s Pass in the South Island – stylist Fallon King from The Little Hire Company created a dreamy scene to blend into the beautiful environment. “I’m originally from the West Coast of the South Island, so by travelling between coasts regularly I’ve passed this scenery too many times to count – it’s majestic!” Fallon’s vision (pictured on these pages) was for something elegant amongst a natural and somewhat rugged backdrop. “We brought in natural and organic elements – foliage, organic linen, recycled paper, hammered hand- crafted jewellery – to contrast with beautiful fabrics, silverware and crystal.” We love the warmth and cosiness of this winter styled shoot so much, that we asked her for some tips on pulling together wedding themes for wintertime too.

HOW CAN BRIDES INCLUDE WINTER ASPECTS INTO THEIR WEDDING STYLING?

Cosy outdoor seating with picnic baskets filled with blankets and wee hot water bottles for guests to feel super snug are perfect. We also love fire pits and hot chocolate stations where guests can make their own with different flavoured chocolates, marshmallows and cookies for that compulsory dip!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ITEMS YOU OFFER FOR HIRE THAT WILL MAKE A BIG IMPACT ON THE MOOD OF A MOMENT?

Good lighting is a must. Evenings get darker so much earlier during the cooler months – making for longer nights and oh- so romantic settings. Think vintage festoon lighting (that work well both inside and outside), and candles at various heights.

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO START WHEN CONSIDERING WEDDING THEMES AND DÉCOR?

Looking at imagery is the best way to figure out what you like and what you don’t (this goes for both wedding style and interior style). Next, contact a hire company or stylist who can help narrow down your style and will suggest options and ideas to suit your budget. They will also offer solutions that you might not have thought of yet. Don’t overlook the set- up and pack- down time and logistics; choosing a professional to take the reins in this department means you can relax on the day knowing that the styling is perfect!
