BACK IN HOLLYWOOD

THE GORGEOUS ACTRESS IS BACK IN THE LIMELIGHT

- Caitlin Spencer

Michelle Pfeiffer’s happy return

Aglamorous red-carpet regular, Michelle Pfeiffer (59) often got the top billing in Hollywood blockbusters.

Beginning with her breakout role as Elvira Hancock in 1983’s Scarface, Michelle went on to earn Oscar nominations for her work in Dangerous Liaison sand The Fabulous Baker Boys.

And then suddenly, it felt like she all but disappeared. That is, until now.

The award-winning actress is back in the limelight, alongside Jennifer Lawrence (27), Javier Bardem (48) and Ed Harris (66), for the Darren Aronofsky (48) thriller that has got everyone talking, Mother!.

However, the award-winning actress doesn’t view this latest movie as her comeback. To her, she never truly left.

“It’s so weird,” she says. “I didn’t really go away. But I do have a lot of work coming out in a condensed period. Throughout my career, it’s always been this way. I’ll go three years without work and then – all of a sudden – it’s bam, bam, bam.

“You think it’s that you’re being offered more interesting and better material, when actually you just mentally want to work and are therefore less likely to pass on things.”

She only appeared in a handful of films in the 2000s, including Hairspray and New Year’s Eve.

After adopting daughter

Claudia Rose, now 24, and marrying producer David E. Kelley (61) in 1993, then giving birth to son John Henry, now 23, in 1994, she eventually decided to switch gears to focus on her kids.

“I’m an empty nester now,” Michelle reveals. “I’ve never lost my love for acting. I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person honestly when I’m working. But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away and whether or notit worked out with the kids’ schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhirable.”

But with her kids now all grown up, Michelle is prioritising her career. She’s enjoying working with new acting talent, inculding Jennifer.

“I like her so much,” she explains.”She is so refreshingly unfiltered and honest. At first, I was a little bit thrown by it, because I’m the opposite. I’m so guarded and careful. But she’s doing really well. She doesn’t need advice from me. For someone her age and with her fame to be that grounded was very surprising.”

Along with Mother!, she starred in HBO’s TheWizardofLies earlier this year, and she will appear with Johnny Depp and Kenneth Branagh this November in the remake of Murderon theOrientExpress.

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears. I’m more open now... I really want to work now, because I can,” says Michelle.
