FROM THE EDITOR

- Alice O’Connell, Editor nzww@bauermedia.co.nz

April 10, 1968 will forever be a dark day in our nation’s history. This week, a staggering 50 years on, we pay tribute to the 53 people who lost their lives in the sinking of the Wahine.

At the same time, we remember those whose lives were forever changed by the events of that day. Remarkably, 50 years later, many of those who were onboard have never talked about the things they saw that day – the acts of heroism, the moments of despair and the true chaos that was unleashed aboard the ship during its final hours.

Five decades on, their recollections of the day are still crystal clear – every detail etched in their memories.

And this week, we’re lucky enough to hear more about what happened from those that were there.

Our news editor Lynley Ward travelled to Wellington and in this issue she tells the stories of three Kiwis – and a young baby – who survived, despite the odds being stacked against them. They’re truly incredible tales and I’m so grateful to Toby, Sharon and Murray for letting us into their homes and taking us back to that horrific day. You’ll certainly be in our thoughts this week as we remember one of our darkest days.
