TRUTH ABOUT TIA
If you’ve had a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), you have an increased risk of having a stroke. More than one in 12 people who have a TIA go on to have a stroke within a week. Knowing you have this greater risk means you can take action to lower the chances.
Your doctor may prescribe medication, including drugs that make your blood less sticky and therefore less likely to clot. Other medication can lower cholesterol and prevent fatty deposits from building up, and lower blood pressure.
They will also recommend you have your blood pressure and blood cholesterol checked regularly. High levels can mean you have a greater chance of having a stroke.
There are also lifestyle changes you can introduce to make you less prone to having a stroke.
