Insider’s guide to… N ew Caledonia

-

GETTING THERE: Air New Zealand and Aircalin both operate direct flights to Noumea from Auckland.

WHERE TO STAY: I can highly recommend the apartments at the Ramada Hotel & Suites Noumea. There’s a pool, my room had a gorgeous balcony overlooking the beach (perfect for a couple of sundowners) and the breakfast buffet is delish. Visit ramadanoumea. com for more info.

BEST TOUR: It’s not cheap (actually, very little is here), but Toutazimut runs fun four-wheel drive tours that’ll take you off the beaten track. There are plenty of waterfalls, beaches and villages to explore. See toutazimut.nc for more.

GLORIOUS FOOD: The local seafood is delicious and the French food a real joy. As most of it is imported, kai can be a little pricey, so make the most of any buffets and raid the local supermarket if you’re on a budget.

ESSENTIALS: English is widely spoken, but it never hurts to brush up on your Français.

The local currency is the Polynesian franc. Be sure to bring togs and sunscreen.
