GREEN GODDESS

THERE’S NO NEED FOR SPECIAL CLEANERS WHEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE WHAT YOU NEED ON HAND

- Did you know you can whiten your sheets using egg shells? Plus, how to use your fire to scent the house and a recipe for a delicious Raisin Roll. Home sweet home! Wendyl Nissen OUR GREEN GODDESS

Here are some great old-fashioned cleaning tips for you to try around the house:

BARBECUE GRILL: Screw up a ball of tin foil and rub the grill until clean. WOOD-BURNER GLASS DOOR: Get a damp cloth and dip it in a little of the wood ash in the bottom of your burner, then use that as a scourer. Or soak kitchen paper towels in brown vinegar and apply to the door – you may need to tape it on to keep it there. Leave for 15 minutes, making sure the kitchen towel is in contact with the glass, then remove and wipe clean.

TO WHITEN LINEN: Crush a handful of egg shells and tie in a calico bag. Boil with the yellowed linen (or try my blueing powder).

BONE-HANDLED CUTLERY:

I love those old bone-handled pieces of cutlery and use mine every day. The secret to keeping them looking good is to make a paste out of cream of tartar and water, then rub on with toothpaste. They should whiten up quite nicely.

CRYSTAL DECANTER: You can clean it by grating some potato and putting it in the decanter. Pour in equal quantities of vinegar and water, then shake. Leave to stand for a few hours before rinsing. Make sure you dry it properly before storing or it might go cloudy. Use a hairdryer held about 5cm from the neck to evaporate all the water. PRECIOUS TAPESTRY: Rub in either damp salt, dry baking soda or bran which you have heated until it is warm. Leave on overnight, then brush off or remove with a vacuum cleaner. PICTURE FRAMES: Prevent frames from tarnishing by applying two coats of clear nail varnish before using. To clean lining, brush and then rub with cloth dipped in lighter fluid. Be careful to only dampen lining and dry well in a cool, airy spot.
