Eating raw vegetables can help to ward off depression, according to a study carried out at the University of Otago. A research team has found that raw vegetables and fruit are better for mental health than those that have been cooked, tinned or processed. It’s thought that this is because essential nutrients may be lost during the cooking process.
The study of the eating habits of more than 400 adults showed that those who ate more raw veges, such as carrots and spinach, had considerably higher levels of psychological wellbeing, including positive moods. They also felt more satisfied with life.
The fruits and veges found to have the biggest impact on mental health were:
• Carrots
• Bananas
• Apples
• Dark leafy greens, ie spinach
• Lettuce
• Citrus fruits
• Fresh berries
• Cucumber
• Kiwifruit
