USE COMMON SENSE WHEN IT COMES TO UNSKILLED DRIVERS

-

You have just bought a cute little 1960s towing caravan. Is your daughter, who is on a restricted driver’s licence, allowed to tow it? And is the caravan covered by your home and contents insurance when it’s parked outside the house between trips?

First of all, yes, your daughter is allowed to tow your caravan while on a restricted licence, as long as the combined weight of the car/trailer and load doesn’t exceed 4500kg. The same applies to drivers on learner licences. Those on full licences may tow loads up to 6000kg. I don’t think you should encourage your teenagers to tow the caravan until they have their full licence and more experience. I’m surprised that learners and those on restricted licences are allowed to tow caravans. As for caravan insurance, do not assume it is covered by either your home or your vehicle insurance. Some major insurers do not include caravans under those covers, while others do. Ask your provider. You may need to purchase special caravan cover.
