MERYL CONFESSES

-

‘My secret shame’

Acting icon Meryl Streep (69) has confessed she can’t watch her old movies because she was so insecure about her appearance when she filmed them.

The Devil Wears Prada star told interviewer Stephen Colbert (54) at a fundraiser that she can relate to Lady Gaga’s character in A Star Is Born – an aspiring singer-songwriter who is told by record label execs that she’ll never make it because her nose is too big.

“I’ll come upon a movie I’m in, and I’m very young and very beautiful. But I was so unhappy. I thought my nose was too big,

I thought I was fat – because these are the things that people tell you.”

However, she feels the early criticism of her appearance by Hollywood heavyweights actually helped her become a star.

“The greatest gift in my career was not being cast as a bombshell early in my career – even though I was one – because I could be a character actor. I could play older when I was young. I

could play a man.”
