It’s a milestone birthday for anyone and so, with Queen Elizabeth turning 95 this month, it is only fitting that much of this week’s issue is dedicated to celebrating a woman who has committed her life to service. While Her Majesty is well-known as someone who can inspire and lead, behind closed doors there are a few surprises!

I remember a few years ago interviewing someone who had worked at Balmoral Castle. He was wandering the grounds one day and unexpectedly bumped into the monarch – he was so surprised, he didn’t recognise her at first. She was very friendly as they chatted and she told him that she was a big fan of New Zealand! He was even more surprised when they bumped into each other much later and she remembered exactly who he was.

I love knowing that she’s a bit of a prankster and adores a good giggle. There’s a delightful anecdote on page 6 where a boatload of fans were looking for her on an island and she dashed down to the beach yelling, “She went that a way!” and jumped with joy as the boat disappeared.

On page 14, we chat to a couple who also have a wonderful sense of humour – Francis and Kaiora Tipene, our popular Casketeers. Despite the seriousness of the role they play in many people’s lives, their enduring love and ability to look on the bright side of life is a real gift.

Elsewhere, I hope you enjoy the stories from page 22 of three brave women who have chosen incredible careers that mean every day they are helping others, and in some cases saving lives. They are truly an inspiration!

Have a lovely week.
