AWARDS GLAMOUR
The stars come out!
If there was any doubt of Catherine O’Hara’s comedy icon status, there won’t be any more after last week’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The 67-year-old Schitt’s Creek star, who plays eccentric former soap star Moira Rose, won the Best Actress in a Comedy category and her triumph at the SAGs completed her clean sweep. She is only the fourth person in history to win all five major award shows in one season.
In her acceptance speech, the ever-humble Catherine credited the writers of the hit show, which also won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, with her success.
“They’re amazing writers,” she enthused. “Their hilariously empathic storytelling gave me and everyone in the town from which I’m currently estranged every possible chance to love, be loved, make happy fools of ourselves and blossom into the best we could be. As if that’s not enough, now this. Thank you so much.”
The night also marked a step in a more inclusive direction.
Awards seasons in previous years have been criticised for their lack of diversity, but this year the four major film acting categories were won by actors of colour. Viola Davis, 55, and the late Chadwick Boseman took home the lead actor awards for their work in the biopic
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Daniel Kaluuya, 32, was praised for his portrayal of American activist Fred Hampton, and Yuh-Jung Youn, 73, was shocked when she won Best Supporting Actress for her moving performance in Minari.
