GEM OF A FILM
The rom-com led to a real-life marriage proposal!
What would you do if the diamond earrings you bought for your girlfriend were accidentally swapped with a diamond ring? Zoey Deutch and Kendrick Sampson star in the rom-com Something From Tiffany’s, based on the popular novel, about a mixup that leads two strangers to the person they’re meant to be with.
What made you want to do the movie?
Zoey: I’m not generally drawn to super feel-good joyful movies, so I think it’s a testament to how special it is. I read this story and I immediately loved it, and I wanted to make it and I wanted to watch it. The universe made it happen at a time when I needed it.
Kendrick: It has elements of a classic rom-com, but all the themes were flipped. Like Zoey, I’m drawn to dark things, so to have a project like this, that was a cosy experience, was very welcome.
If you were in this situation, would you go ahead with the proposal or would you tell the truth?
Kendrick: I like to think that I wouldn’t rush into a proposal, but I might pawn the ring! If I didn’t know whose ring it was, it might end up at a pawn shop.
What was your favourite moment from making the movie?
Zoey: I remember when we were filming the proposal scene, I looked at my friend who was on set that day, and I looked at her hand and saw a ring on it – she had gotten engaged that morning! We had a little celebration and it was lovely. Kendrick: I can’t beat that! I always go back to hanging out with Leah [Jefries], who plays my daughter, in between takes. We would get too loud and laugh a lot at our inside jokes. We also had a Tic-Tac-Toe tournament and I’m very proud to say I beat her.
Do you have any plans to come to New Zealand any time soon?
Zoey: It’s one of the top places I want to go in the world. I’ve just heard the most extraordinary things about it and everybody that I know from New Zealand is just the kindest, most special light. There’s something in the water over there!
