TANEA HEKE

The actor and Toi Whakaari director likes her biscuits plain but her TV viewing with extra bling!

Not a lot of people know this about me, but… I’m very good at playing knuckle bones using my left hand. And yet, I’m right-handed – go figure. The song I listen to when I need a pick-me-up is… Give You Blue by Allen Stone. I heard it the first time when me and the kids were in Melbourne for my brother’s wedding. A brilliant weekend full of wh¯anau, kai and ko¯rero [conversation]! The shops I can’t walk past

are… Service Depot and Kowtow in Wellington and The Shelter in Auckland. I love [designer] Jimmy D – he is totally awesome, so I have his website on speed dial. Big fan… And if I’m buying overseas brands, there is an amazing website Matches based in the UK. My dream Sunday is…

Spending time with moko [grandchildren], the kids and my husband. Over summer,

we’ve spent a lot of time up at Paek¯ak¯ariki Beach. It has really filled the tank… I’m ready to start the year with my colleagues and students at Te Kura Toi Whakaari! My comfort food is…

Arnott’s Chocolate Scotch Fingers – don’t ask me why. I just love them and they’re really hard to find here in Wellington. I found them at New World in New Lynn up in Auckland. The reality TV series I love

is… Bling Empire: New York. My daughter Omapere and I went for my first visit to the Big Aporo last year and just loved the vibrancy of the city. So I watched the series thinking I’d see some landmarks. OMG – the characters are outrageous. I love them – Tina is my favourite, and I’m still figuring out what and who Stephen is. Terrible and fabulous all at the same time.

The two radio stations I listen to the most are…

Mai FM. Tegan Yorwarth is an extraordinary wahine – incredibly upbeat and positive. What a role model for taiohi [teenagers] and the older set too! And I’m a National Programme fan. The recent Kim Hill interview with Robyn Malcolm was inspiring listening.

Tanea Heke is the director of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School and is currently starring as Amo in Not Even, available now on Neon and SkyGo.
