Standing ovation! The Aussie opera star’s singing the praises of hot chips and Kiwi ski slopes

Tell us a little bit about your upcoming show…

Mansfield Park is a well known and loved story by Jane Austen. This opera, composed by Jonathan Dove in 2011, with libretto by Alasdair Middleton, is cast for 10 singers and two pianos. It’s an exciting opera to experience, not only to hear an ensemble of great singers and music, but to be taken on a journey into the inner lives and moral struggles of these characters in relationship to one another.

Were you a Jane Austen fan before you took on the role of Fanny?

I had read a little and watched films. This project has sent me into a deep dive, and I’ve loved reading more and getting into the Austen world. I enjoy a twisted love story and I also love looking at the psychology of characters, their motives and backgrounds. Austen gives so much to her detailed portrayal of these characters, how could you not get sucked in?

What’s your favourite opera to perform?

Last year, I made my role debut as Carmen and it was the most fun I’d ever had on stage. It’s a long role and took me several years to have the stamina to do. Carmen has some of the most beautiful music. As Carmen, you can express so much – the fire and the sass, as well as the deep and dark emotions. It challenges me to bring as much colour and as much of myself as possible.

You learned to snowboard at Cardrona – do you have plans to hit the slopes this winter?

I wish! Snowboarding in New Zealand brings back the happiest of memories. This winter, I’ll be performing with Western Australian Opera, playing the role of Ježibaba in a new production of Rusalka.

What’s the song you listen to when you need a pick-me-up?

Sérgio Mendes’ 1966 cover of Mais Que Nada, preferably while driving.

What is your comfort food?

Hot chips. I hate to admit that... It’s simple but it’s true.

What always makes you laugh?

Catching up with my dearest friends – they’re so important to me. Even when life at times is tough, I can sit with them and laugh about almost anything.

What series are you bingeing right now?

I try not to start new series as I’ll have to finish it within a few nights – it’s too addictive!

The last series I watched and loved was The Crown.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Singing for a living.
