STAFF REPORTER Schools and communities in Southland are being asked to nominate music teachers or mentors for New Zealand’s inaugural Music Teacher of the Year award.

Organised by Recorded Music NZ and the NZ Music Commission, the award will be presented as part of the 2018 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in November.

Recorded Music chief executive Damian Vaughan said many artists who make it to the music awards stage credit a music teacher or mentor as instrumental in their development.

‘‘The award will celebrate the exceptional influence music teachers have on our children, not only in establishing the foundations of careers in music but by providing a positive and long-lasting impact on their lives.

‘‘We need to celebrate the people who make this possible.’’

The teacher or mentor must have run a music programme between June 2017 and the end of May this year to be eligible for the award.

Nominations close at 5pm on June 15. More information: nzmusicawards.co.nz/ musicteacher/
