Wishing tree appeal starts up

-

The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is back at Albany.

Now in its 20th year, it will support families in need this festive season.

Kmart aims to collect more than 45,000 gifts during the appeal, which started yesterday and runs until December 24.

Since it began two decades ago the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has become New Zealand’s largest Christmas appeal. Last year an impressive 2330 gifts were donated.

‘‘In 2014, we ask residents to dig deeper and help us to deliver more gifts and Christmas cheer than ever before,’’ Kmart Albany store manager Regan Wallis says.

‘‘Help us set a new record and visit your Albany store, where the appeal will launch with a cake cutting ceremony, followed by performances from both The Salvation Army Musical Ensemble and our local day- care centre, Educare. It will be a fun filled family day.’’

Shoppers are invited to simply choose a gift that’s suitable for the recipient’s gender and age and place it under the trees at Kmart stores.

Last year, the Salvation Army helped more than 14,000 families throughout New Zealand during the Christmas period.

‘‘Christmas can sometimes be a time when marginalised families feel the strain of not being able to afford something special for their loved ones,’’ Salvation Army social services secretary Major Pam Waugh says.
