Going up in world for a deserving cause

- By RIA ELKINGTON

Police are stepping out in style for a good cause.

A group of officers has volunteered to wear heels and take a stand against violence towards women.

The global White Ribbon Walk A Mile In Her Shoes awareness campaign is coming to New Zealand for the first time.

Advocates will be getting behind the initiative and walking around the streets of Takapuna in women’s shoes to show their support.

The day will include high profile speakers, free refreshments, information packs and balloons for the children.

Senior Sergeant Kirstina Jamieson says family violence continues to be a serious problem in New Zealand and police are con- stantly working with the community to combat the problem and enhance support for families that are affected by it.

Participating in the event will help promote safe, healthy relationships within families and encourage men to challenge each other on abusive attitudes and behaviour, she says.

Also joining the group of walkers will be the annual White Ribbon motorcyclists who are travelling the North Island and will be joined by a local group of riders led by heavyweight boxing champion Shane Cameron.

Jamieson is encouraging all members of the community to take part in the event in any type of shoes.

The North Shore Family Violence Prevention Network is also looking for large women’s heels.

If you have a pair of size 9 or larger heels that you want to donate for the walk, drop off points are the Z service stations on Taharoto Rd and East Coast Rd in Northcross.

The walk will be held on November 27 from 11am to 1pm. It starts and ends at Potters Park in Takapuna (The Rose Garden).
