Safe to be on our streets next Friday
Fern Wendt- Corfe believes passionately in a country free from factory farming.
The Orewa resident especially wants New Zealand to be free of factory pig farming.
Fern’s a volunteer for animal charity Safe and says December 5, International Volunteer Day, is the perfect time for people to sign up to help animals.
Orewa volunteers are getting out there to help all animals.
‘‘My heart truly breaks for these animals,’’ Fern says. ‘‘When I saw the cruelty towards those pigs I knew I couldn’t sit back and do nothing. That’s why this International Volunteer Day I want to talk about what motivates me – how I will be helping to make a difference for New Zealand animals.’’
Fern is one of more than 1000 people expected to be collecting nationwide during Safe’s annual appeal this year. The vibrant and fun event, complete with collectors in animal costumes, will take place December 19 and 20.
‘‘Animal welfare is my passion. I’ve been volunteering for Safe for some time now, doing all manner of things to help animals,’’ she says. ‘‘I feel that their work is vitally important to help spread the word so we can make things better for animals who are suffering. I really encourage local people to join me in December. It really takes so little of our time, but can make a huge difference.’’
Money raised during the appeal will be used to fund campaign initiatives and humane education projects in 2015.
‘‘Safe’s work is entirely funded by donations provided by generous members of the public. As well as raising money to help animals, the appeal is lots of fun, with communities from all over the country coming together to show their compassion for animals. It’s inspiring to see, and we’re so grateful to those who donate and volunteer their time,’’ Safe executive director Hans Kriek says.
Visit safe. org. nz to register. Collectors can give as little time as two hours to collect in their own area.
