Runaway bus on Bush Rd
An out of control on the wrong side of the road hit cars then ploughed through trees into the car park of a busy building supplies centre.
The Ritchies bus swerved out the path of a truck then careened into ITM Albany’s car park, where it was stopped by a parked car at about 8.20am. The bus narrowly missed a digger and its driver working on a site next to the carpark.
ITM staff rushed to the aid of the bus driver. ITM Albany Health and Safety manager Carolyn Chalklen said she understood the bus driver lost control about 300 metres up the road.
‘‘She has come down the hill on the wrong side of the road, and clipped a couple of cars,’’ she said.
The bus broke through the fence of neighbouring reserve, uprooting fence posts, then bowled through trees beside the digger.
The driver then left the bus began staggering back up the road. It was understood she was concerned for the occupants of the cars she had clipped, Chalken said.
‘‘I said go get the bus driver and bring her back here. She is clearly in shock and we don’t want her standing out in the middle of the road getting run over.’’
Emergency services then arrived. An ITM staff member’s car suffered minor damage, Chalken said. She thought it was fortunate no-one was hurt considering the time of day, and the fact that Pinehurst School was just across the road.
‘‘It is just unbelievable she hasn’t hit anybody.’’

The front of the bus was left in bad shape after hitting cars, crashing through fences and trees and then into another car.
