Cocktails on Wakatipu sets bar high

- PAMELA WADE

Yes, it is a proper bar, with a good choice of beers, wines and more, but mainly, this is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the Queenstown waterfront vibe.

Permanently moored at a jetty in the heart of the action, this personable boat welcomes everybody, including children and dogs.

Built in Colchester, England, in 1955, Million Dollar 1 has spent its working life in

Aotearoa, mostly on Lake Rotorua, before being moved to Queenstown seven years ago to become Perky’s Floating Bar.

Inside is a cabin with wooden seats and tables and a separate bar.

Serving a wide range of drinks, alcoholic and not, the emphasis is on local beverages. The best bit though is outside. Step onto the bow, and there are stools and a leaner with a perfect view across Lake Wakatipu towards Cecil and Walter peaks. Go higher, and there are beanbags for a comfy sprawl in the sunshine.

Just behind, under a shady roof, are tables and benches ideal for a long, leisurely observation of everything that is going on, all overlooked by The Remarkables.

WHY GO?

Because why wouldn’t you want to try out New Zealand’s only floating bar? Add on that worldfamous view, and some intriguing beers and seasonal cocktails, and it is an hour or two very pleasantly filled, whatever the time of day.

INSIDER TIP

Check out the imaginative cocktail menu for some fruity delights that taste almost healthy. Unusually, you are welcome to bring your own food to have with your drinks.

Perky’s also has an excellent deal on offer: pay $20, sit down with your glass of wine or beer, and nearby Devil Burger will deliver your choice of a burger and fries.

ON THE WAY/NEARBY

You have a bird’s-eye view of people excitedly boarding the Hydro Attack craft next door for the stomach-churning shark ride on the lake.

The TSS Earnslaw steamship will chug past periodically, and smaller boats dart in and out, including the Million Dollar Cruise. Nearby restaurants’ outdoor tables are always busy, and Steamer Wharf is close, as is Earnslaw Park with its Saturday market.

HOW MUCH?

You could enjoy all this for a $4.50 soft drink but, with so many cocktails, wines and beers, that would be wasting the opportunity.

BEST TIME TO GO

The bar is open from noon until 11pm every day. There is always plenty to enjoy. Sunset is lovely too, at any time of year, with heaters inside and out, and blankets available. Visit perkys.co.nz.
