Folky festival returns

- LAINE MOGER

Fiddles, saxophone and smooth bluegrass blues are on offer at Devonport’s annual folk music festival.

Folk in the Park is hosted by the Devonport Folk Club, the long standing inhabitants of Mt Victoria’s The Bunker, at Windsor Reserve on February 12.

Chairman Roger Giles says the festival, now in it’s tenth year, is a responsibility inherited from a woman who used to work at Depot Artspace.

The afternoon will feature several artists including Albi and the Wolves, Tweed, Madeline Beasley & Phoenix Hamilton, Graveyard Shift, and Hanna Wiskari and Neil Watson.

While not all artists are members of the Devonport Folk Club, all artists are in someway a part of the ‘‘folk fraternity’’, Giles says.

‘‘We want to showcase the club and introduce people to our kind of music,’’ he says.

‘‘It’s a relaxing afternoon for parents to watch their kids dancing to the music.’’

Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic, but a sausage sizzle or two will be available to buy.

The festival is weather-dependent and will be cancelled for rain.
