Registrations open for 2017 Shore to Shore

- SPORT REPORTER

One of the country’s biggest and longest-running fun run events is back for 2017.

Harbour Sport’s Shore To Shore will be held on April 9, with thousands of runners once again set to pound the pavements between Takapuna Beach and Milford Reserve.

The event, which also takes the runners along Takapuna and Milford Beaches, attracted almost 5000 entries last year.

As a result, just under $20,000 in cash and prizes was given back to 41 schools in the Harbour region to buy sports equipment, in a scheme based on the more entries a school gathers, the bigger the grant they earn.

Harbour Sport event manager Jess Raymond says the way all the schools in the region embrace the event is inspiring.

‘‘Every year this event is incredibly successful, and this year’s edition will be no different. It’s a great way for schools and members of the community to rally together and have fun while raising money for their school and being active together,’’ Raymond says.

‘‘To top last year’s event all schools have do it is get as many entries together as they can and then enjoy the fun day. Sunday April 9 is set to be another great day in Shore to Shore history.’’

The Shore to Shore began in 1984.

In the early days, some of the world’s best athletes of the time competed in the 10km race. Britain’s Dave Moorcroft, the then world record holder for the 5000m, won the inaugural event in a time of 28min 57sec, and Boston and New York Marathon winner, Allison Roe, won the women’s race in 34:11.

Online registrations are now open at shoretoshore.co.nz.
