Performers harmonise

- LAINE MOGER

For the 20th year in a row, a medley of multicultural performances will take to the PumpHouse stage to celebrate Auckland’s diverse identity.

The Lakeside Multicultural Festival is organised by the Auckland Multicultural Society, featuring groups from Chile, China, Tibet and more.

President Thuten Kesang says the multicultural society has almost become redundant with the influx of cultural groups in our community.

However, in spite of this, he said the longstanding event will return to emphasise the ongoing importance of sharing culture in New Zealand. ‘‘It is only through sharing that we can live harmoniously in this country,’’ Kesang said.

‘‘More human understanding between different cultures comes from true sharing of culture and each other’s way of life,’’ he said.

Festival performer Ana Maria de Vos will be presenting the Folklore Chileno Latino dance from Chile, South America.

De Vos says, despite her feeling like a New Zealander, she enjoys sharing her culture with her new Kiwi family.

‘‘They will be transported around the world through the dancers, musicians and performers wearing their traditional costumes.’’

This is a free, family event supported by Creative NZ. March 12, 1pm till 5pm at the PumpHouse.
