INVITATION TO LUCAS CREEK
Note to Nick Smith – assuming you are not confusing Lucas Creek, Albany, with Lucas Bay, Akaroa, we live 15 seconds as the (slow) crow flies from the former and have done for three years. A suggestion – before you rely on a desk check, you should do the hat trick. Put on your hat, get out of your ivory tower and come up to swim its length. You are allowed neither mask, fins nor snorkel. You must duck dive every 100 metres. Ever since we have known it, it has been too thin to plough and too thick to drink. Now we find it contains heaps of nasty things as well. After an appropriate incubation period, if you haven’t been hospitalised, feel free to justify your decision. We don’t anticipate seeing any life forms, other than ducks, geese and pukekos emulating your effort – should it come to pass. I’m not holding my breath.

GOALS REFRESHING
It is refreshing to see the new local board and Grant Gillon (as chairman) working in harmony for the benefit of constituents of the area, unlike some the previous boards and chairs. How encouraging it is to see that one of the goals of our new chairman is the improvement of the Takapuna to Milford Coastal Walkway (North Shore Times, March 2). Well done to all and I look forward to future progress.

BINS AT BEACHES
Every Sunday morning (and on public holidays), when we walk from Murray’s Bay to Mairangi Bay, the rubbish has cascaded out of the bins and is all around the area. On Sunday 26th February at 10am, we swam at Rothesay Bay and were alarmed to find the same thing. Both bins were overflowing and disgusting. We have informed the council of this previously and have not seen an improvement. Couldn’t they provide bigger bins and why can’t the contractor empty them earlier especially in the summer?
Australia has a larger population but the care and attention shown towards their beaches and reserves is impressive. What has happened to the East Coast Bays? Are we satisfied with this? Where is our pride in our number one asset? Anne and Rick Dezoete Rothesay Bay

SHARE THE BEACH
Not only do the dogs enjoy themselves on the beach but also the dog owners? We not only pick up dog poop but also all the other rubbish left by untidy Kiwis. The reason there are lots of dogs on the beach at the same time is because the hours are restricted during summer. I visited a beach in the Bay of Plenty over summer and there were no restrictions and it worked fine.
