City-side to Shore

-

Alex Smith, 42, managing partner at Tabak Business Sales lives in Hauraki Corner

How long have you lived here and where are you from?

I’ve been living on the Shore since 2013. Prior to that, I was a city dweller for about 17 years before my wife Lisa (who was born and raised on the Shore) made a very compelling argument and we haven’t looked back.

What are the greatest advantages to living here?

While we remain near to the city, it feels much more relaxed and community-centric.

Where is your favourite North Shore beach and why?

It has to be Takapuna Beach. I enjoy seeing the beach used by so many people for so many reasons – from walking the dog to beach and water sports. And the playground is fantastic! It is just a testament to the community.

Who is the person you admire the most and why?

It is impossible to identify just one person. I’m inspired by people who excel at whatever they do. Whether it is at business, sport, family. I believe that every person I meet is better at at least one thing than I am. I admire that and like to learn from them.

What do you like least about the Shore and how can we fix it?

I think it is very hard for small businesses to survive on the Shore. I often see vacant buildings and that is not a good thing. For us to have a vibrant community, we also need a vibrant business community.

Where is the best place to have a meal?

‘‘ For us to have a vibrant community, we also need a vibrant business community.’’

There are many excellent eateries on the Shore, and I love the restaurant development on Takapuna Beach. What a great idea to have venues face the ocean! In saying that – I have a soft spot for the Takapuna markets. Especially the mussel fritters.

What are you doing this weekend?

Nice long walk on the beach, followed by a coffee and a mussel fritter!
