Rolling into parade

Nikki Henderson is a Birkdale resident who adopts the persona Nikalicious Vicious when she plays roller derby

How long have you lived here and where are you from?

I’ve lived in Birkdale for just over a year and a half. I’m originally from Tauranga but I also lived in Albany for four years to attend university years ago.

Describe your neighbourhood.

It’s safe with quiet streets. There are lots of cats and native wildlife co-existing.

What is your earliest memory of the Shore? Wide open fields where the Albany Westfield is now and Albany village being a quiet sleepy place.

What are the greatest advantages to living here?

It’s super close to work at Vodafone in Smales Farm. It’s only a 15-minute drive or 30-minute e-bike ride.

Where is your favourite North Shore beach and why?

Milford Beach, it’s easy to get to and nice for swimming in summer. Also, you can’t beat the walk from there to Takapuna.

Who is the person you admire the most and why?

J.K. Rowling - for creating Harry Potter.

What do you like least about the Shore and how can we fix it?

The lack of ways to get from the Shore to town without a car (bike, walking, skating, etc). Ferries aren’t frequent enough outside of peak hours. I can’t wait for the SkyPath!

Where is the best place to have a meal?

Any of the restaurants in Highbury - so many different cuisines on offer.

‘‘It gives us an opportunity to show what skills it takes to play roller derby.’’

What are you doing this weekend?

If it’s fine, I’ll be going for a roller skate along the waterfront and Mission Bay in preparation for the upcoming Farmers Santa Parade. My Roller derby league, the Pirate City Rollers take part every year as it gives us an opportunity to show what skills it takes to play roller derby and hopefully inspire more people to join!
