New chapter for libraries

- HUGH COLLINS

More than 1000 staff at libraries across Auckland face an uncertain future.

Auckland Libraries staff recently received documents from their employer Auckland Council containing proposed changes to their work conditions.

The council’s 55 libraries employ 1009 people, including part-time and casual staff.

Public Service Association national secretary Glenn Barclay says staff will be reading the documentation and how it will impact them and their colleagues, and the services they provide.

‘‘We agree that there are opportunities to improve library services for Aucklanders, but we are concerned about the prospect of job losses and reduced funding.’’

Barclay says, while there are elements of the changes that the PSA agrees with, such as ensuring Auckland Libraries are ready for a digital future, any change would be stressful for people going through it.

The PSA hopes Auckland Council will be flexible in terms of making the outcome of the process work for as many people as possible. Final decisions are expected mid-March or later, depending on the level of feedback.

Auckland Libraries general manager Mirla Edmundson says staff have until mid-February to provide feedback.

Earlier, Edmundson said a challenge was responding to changes, such as a rise in use of e-books and decline in print transactions.
