La Leche League plans Latch On event

- YVETTE BATTEN

Latching on is trendy.

All women with infants are welcome to join the La Leche League for the World Breastfeeding Week’s Big Latch On event to be held at the Len Lye Centre’s Todd Energy Learning Centre on August 5.

‘‘It’s about gathering breastfeeding women together to try and break the record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously,’’ league leader Laura Richards said.

‘‘It’s a bit of a fun morning to remind mothers that there’s others out there and also just to let them know about support that is available.’’

People register for free on the day, which includes morning tea, at 10am and the latch on starts at 10.30am. Last year’s event in New Plymouth drew 49 mothers.

‘‘The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding exclusively for six months and then to at least two years or beyond for the health benefits for babies. Breastfeeding is more than just nutrition. It’s also comfort and support and bonding. It’s not just for babies.’’

The league is all about providing mother to mother breastfeeding support. Leaders are available for telephone or email help, as well as running two meetings a month in New Plymouth.

For more information visit lalecheleague.org.nz, find the group on Facebook, phone 758 3076 or pop into the main meeting held on the second Tuesday of each month at St Andrew’s Church at 10am.

If people can’t make it to The Big Latch On, they’re welcome to take a breastfeeding selfie and post it to the event’s social media pages with the hashtag brelfie.
