Money is still filtering to the North Taranaki SPCA after Cupcake Day.

During August the animal rescue organisation ran its sweetest fundraiser where people made cupcakes, sold them, and then gave the money to their nearest SPCA.

Shelter spokeswoman Jackie Poles Smith suspected they’d reach the $10,000 mark.

‘‘It was fabulous again, absolutely amazing,’’ she said.

‘‘Once again Devon Intermediate kids just excelled in their baking and decorating of cupcakes for the SPCA.

‘‘They also sold at stalls on the Monday and raised just under $1000. That was basically just their cupcakes on that day. Then they kept on baking so that we had cupcakes to sell the following weekend.’’

In previous years students from Devon have usually made about 1000 cupcakes, but this year they lost count.

Poles Smith also wanted to mention Pauline Spragg from Harcourts in Inglewood and AnnieKims and Star Anise cafes.

‘‘A combination of all of those wonderful people and lots of volunteers resulted in us raising While the Cupcake Day is held around the country on August 15, it’s so popular in New Plymouth the North Taranaki SPCA extends it to the weekend of August 20 and 21.

$8000 and there will be more money to come from the registered bakers so we’re very optimistic we’ll get to $10,000 as we did last year. We’re very, very pleased with that.’’

Not everyone registers for the event, which means in the weeks following the event the shelter gets many visits from people making donations.

Radius Thornleigh Park Rest Home and Hospital residents visited the shelter to drop off a $130 cheque they raised with decorated cupcakes and a raffle.

‘‘It’s really so that the residents still have the opportunity to give back to the community. They actually decide which charities to support and the SPCA was the top,’’ diversional therapist Helen Baverstock said.

Money raised during this year’s cupcake event will give the shelter a welcome boost in time for the busy kitten season.
