Toastmasters is a worldwide network of clubs that provides people with the opportunity to develop public speaking, communication and leadership skills.

On September 3, the Pukekura Toastmasters club is holding its 50-year anniversary – an occasion to be celebrated.

Pukekura Toastmasters has had its fair share achievements and standout members since its humble beginnings – testimony to those who have benefited from the opportunities and personal development gained through the programme.

The club has been responsible for establishing several other clubs in the community, including the current Ngamotu Breakfast Club and Stratford Toastmasters.

In 1993, Pukekura Toastmasters placed in the top five clubs internationally and No 1 in New Zealand – quite an achievement considering there are now more than 15,000 clubs worldwide.

The club has also seen one of its members go on to hold the role of Toastmasters international president.

Giving back to the community and supporting our future leaders is also part of the Pukekura Toastmasters ethos. Annually for the last 40-plus years the club has organised and run a years 7 and 8 North Taranaki school student speech contest.

This contest provides youth a platform where they can practise their speaking skills in a public setting.

On Saturday, September 3, this impressive history, and more, will be celebrated at a dinner event, held at Plymouth International from 6pm to 9pm.

Keynote speakers include Haydn Jones, presenter of Good Sorts, which celebrates community heroes, and copresenter of consumer affairs show Fair Go; Jamie Allen, first Dean of Taranaki Cathedral and founder of Taranaki Retreat; and James Annabell founder and Egmont Honey Ltd chief executive.

This evening of celebration is open to the public. The club would love past and present Toastmasters, guests, associates and anyone interested to join us for this special occasion.

Tickets are $40, which includes canapes, a complimentary drink, dinner and an evening of entertainment. To reserve your place, find the event online: Pukekura Toastmasters 50 Year Anniversary Celebration; visit Facebook: @PukekuraToastmasters or phone/text 027 490 7490.
