Talking about men’s health

- BAYLEY MOOR

Men and their partners are invited to a free health event to discuss and learn more about health issues that may affect them.

The Waipapa, Kerikeri, Kaikohe and Okaihau Lions clubs have organised a men’s health night where local GPs will talk about heart care, prostate screening, skin cancer and general medical issues.

It will take place at the Turner Centre on May 31 from 7pm.

Far North Mayor John Carter encourages men to talk more openly about their health.

As a survivor of both prostate and bowel cancer Carter knows better than most about the importance of early detection of any potential health problems.

It’s so simple to get checked and it’s really no big deal, he says.

‘‘The sooner it’s found, the sooner it can be treated.

‘‘If they can’t do it for themselves, they should do it for their families.’’

Carter faced a bit of a recovery time after a procedure to have his prostate removed last year but he no longer has to worry, he says.

Kerikeri GP Chris Reed is speaking at the event and says traditionally men are the ones who don’t visit their doctor for preventative healthcare.

‘‘There is often a good response from men if we can take it into a different domain.’’

Reed says it’s great that the Lions have seen that there is a need for this type of event.

‘‘These educational events are really important as it encourages people to take ownership of their health.

‘‘Preventative health is the gold standard.’’

Waipapa Lions Club member Tony Admiraal says a similar event held a few years ago inspired a number of people to get their health checked.

Cancer is a big killer in New Zealand, he says, so it’s important that people visit their GP for check ups.

The event is run in partnership with Te Tai Tokerau Primary Health Organisation.

A gold coin donation will be used to assist men in going to the doctor who may need financial support.

About 3000 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year.
