Volunteers captured in special book

- JENNY LING

The Far North’s wonderful volunteer groups have been championed in a new photography book.

Bay of Islands-Kaikohe Photography Club members have captured the selfless work of numerous volunteer groups in and around Kerikeri, Paihia and Kawakawa in the hardcover book called Volunteers in the Bay of Islands.

Club committee member and photographer Coral Moller says the idea came about after the club received a grant from the arts council years ago.

‘‘Nothing was ever done with it,’’ she says.

‘‘I came up with the idea of doing the book on volunteers because there are so many volunteers and they’re never recognised. I put the idea to the club and they agreed.’’

Thirteen club members were involved in the photography; Lynnis Burson, Judy Klaus, Jill Lancaster, Irene and Doug Dysart, Geoff Tilley, Avis Mountain, Sherilee Banks, Lesley Parker, Cornelia Luethi, Barbara Stewart, Grace Hanley and Coral Moller.

They took stunning pictures of volunteer groups going about their work including Project Island Song, Paihia Volunteer Fire Brigade, Riding for the Disabled, Rotary, the SPCA, Red Cross, Kerikeri Shadehouse, Citizens Advice and Outreach Therapy Pets.

Two books have been given to the Kerikeri library, and one each to the Paihia and Kawakawa libraries. The book is also on display at the Kerikeri Library.

Moller, who was an Outreach Therapy Pets volunteer for two years, says she’s pleased to ‘‘bring some of the volunteers to the fore and tell people who they are and show people what they do’’.

‘‘Most people are interested because it’s all local and they

know there will be somebody in there that they know.’’

The club meets every second Thursday of the month at Cherry Park House in Kerikeri.

Each month members are given a theme to test their photography skills with, and they are then judged on them by someone from the Photographic Society of New Zealand.

Moller says she likes taking ‘still life’ pictures, and also enjoys tinkering with them later using Photoshop.
