RNLS name new head students

Rangiora New Life School announced their 2017 head students at the senior prize giving on Tuesday night.

Charlie de la Cour and India Fitzgibbon were announced to the school community by outgoing head students Jack Andrews and Katelyn Weineck.

The deputies announced.

Head boy de la Cour will be assisted by deputy Eli Marshall, while Brianna Duke will act as deputy to head girl Fitzgibbon.

‘‘Both students show outstandin­g merit and have already impressed both staff and students both with their current leadership, and throughout the rigorous selection process, with their maturity and caring,’’ Principal Stephen Walters said.

‘‘We thank our outgoing Heads – Jack and Katelyn for a job ‘well done’ and wish them every success in their future.’’

Andrews is planning on taking an ‘‘explorativ­e year’’ where he hopes to include travel.

As an internatio­nally qualified Surf Instructor he is currently working for the Christchur­ch School of Surf.

Weineck plans on having a gap year in 2017 and then plans to attend University of Canterbury to complete a Teaching degree.

While the new head students were also were announced to lead the student campus in 2017, Aiden Pons was named the RNLS Dux for the 2016 graduating class.

Pons was first in Y13 biology, chemistry, christian living, physics and also received a Yr 13 diligence award.

He also received academic awards for senior english, christian living, mathematic­s and senior science, and the MainPower Award for Excellence in Physics and Chemistry.

Bonny Fawcett was the Proxime accessit (Runner up to Dux).

Fawcett was first in Y13 Photograph­y and an academic award for Senior photograph­y as well as a Yr 13 diligence award.

There was also big news for the school this week.

RNLS is another to receive Ministry of Education funding with $310,000 for three additional classrooms that will be transporte­d and installed on site over the summer break.

The classrooms, two primary classrooms and one secondary, are necessary to fulfil the requiremen­ts of the school’s new maximum roll increase to 470 students after the roll reached 420 this year, Walters said .
