LIGHTING THE WAY

-

The Waimakariri District Council is replacing the Southbrook RdSouth Belt roundabout with traffic lights in a plan to ease congestion and we asked if you think the lights will smooth the traffic flows? Here are a selection of the answers from neighbourly.co.nz.

Lou Reeves (Rangiora)

Another round route would be good traffic is crazy we live on Percival St so much traffic now!

Scott Pritchard (Rangiora)

Can we get the Southbrook School crossing turned into a full time zebra crossing with stop go lights? Or a pedestrian tunnel or an over bridge that would help traffic around school times. How about banning cars turning right out of the road beside Rangiora New Life School? Frustrating and dangerous turning across traffic onto Southbrook.

Annette Smith (Rangiora)

Another ring road to get us across the other side of High St would be great.

Linda Stewart (Rangiora)

It’s an improvement but it doesn’t resolve the overall issue. What is needed is existing roads utilised to divert peak time traffic. That will most likely mean building connector roads. The main issue is the peak time traffic heading south to work and return. As population increases utilising existing roads has to be assessed sooner rather than later or those moving here will do an about turn and leave. And what would that do to property values!

Marina Locke (Fernside)

Yes a ring road! Population is growing Rangiora into a city, not a small town anymore!

Leonard Church (Rangiora)

Lights will only slow traffic down and make more people go alternate routs eg Fernside Rd?Woodend Rd. Putting these roads into higher volumes. These roads need upgrading now before that happens eg the extension of West Belt to Fernside Rd would be a start.

Michelle Bourdot (Rangiora)

Yes great idea is long time overdue! So many people so don’t know how to use the roundabout. Does get very frustrating.

Nick Jordan (Rangiora)

This is fiddling while Rome burns! Just another waste of our money, they’ve been building new roundabouts all over Rangiora, now the council says traffic lights are better? Donald Trump would do a better job. One ‘‘councillor’’ actually used the hold ups as a way of self promotion! Spend some money now on better wider roads, new roads, bridges, but not bloody traffic lights, that will slow traffic down even more. The council needs to hire someone to sort out the problem once and for all.

Margaret Winter (Rangiora)

Where will the schools cross? Hopefully at the lights, so traffic can at least flow once through the intersection.

Sara Raudsepp (Kaiapoi)

Kaiapoi will take your secondhand round-a-bout. It was promised there would be one installed at Smith St, Williams St, Beach Rd intersection when the new sub-division was built. Hasn’t happened (of course) and this intersection is a nightmare. We’re not too proud to accept hand me downs.

Jayne Toohey (Rangiora)

We live on Southbrook Rd, the traffic starts about 5:30am and builds increasingly throughout
