Kaiapoi KYDZ plan muddy event

- EMMA DANGERFIELD

The future of Kaiapoi looks to be in safe hands, as a deputation from local youth group KYDZ impressed members of the Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board at this week’s meeting.

Acting board chair Chris Greengrass said the board was really impressed by their presentation and their enthusiasm.

The Board approved a grant of $300 to You, Me, We Us Kaiapoi on the behalf of KYDZ in order to fund advertising and promotional material for their Mud Fest event.

The KYDZ Mud Fest will consist of participants navigating under, over and through a number of muddy and wet obstacles in addition to other fun activities.

Although the event is geared towards the youth, it is open to anyone and it is estimated 150 people may participate or observe the event. It’s booked to take place on Sunday June 17 on vacant Regeneration Area land.

The board also approved names for two new roads in the Kaiapoi area. The road name for the new arterial road in west Kaiapoi will be known as Ohoka Rd up until the intersection with Mill Rd, after that point it will become Skewbridge Rd. The proposed name was previously discussed with and suggested by the Kaiapoi Tuahiwi Community Board.

There will be approximately seven properties affected by the new name and require the issuing of new numbers, however the majority are under council ownership. Notification will also be sent to the Oxford-Ohoka Community Board.

In Kaiapoi’s Regeneration East area, Feldwick Dr was approved for the road which is currently under construction and due to be completed in June.

Board members also gave formal approval to replace stop signs with new give way signs at the roundabout currently under construction at the Williams St/ Smith St/Beach Rd intersection and give way signs at Mill Rd at the intersection with the Passchendaele Pathway.
