Cheviot scrape home in thriller

-

Cheviot overcame Darfield in a thrilling low-scoring battle in the latest round of country cricket at the weekend.

A five-wicket haul from Cheviot Magpies’ Will Anderson helped reduce Darfield to a paltry 124 in the first innings of their 2022/23 Canterbury Country Premier One Day competition match on Saturday.

An aggressive half-century from makeshift opener Scott Burnett, after he’d grabbed three wickets with the ball, had Cheviot cruising to victory at 90/4.

But when Burnett succumbed to Liam Foulkes’ off-spin for 52, it sparked a massive Magpies collapse, losing three wickets for no runs.

Batting at number 11, it was left to some heroics from Johnny Fitzpatrick, who made an unbeaten 17 off 28 balls, including a six, to secure the onewicket win in the 33rd over.

At Mandeville, visitors Peninsula-Harbour batted first and made 214/5 in their allotted 45 overs. They were led by a composed Dominic Evans, who opened the batting and carried his bat throughout the innings, finishing on 89 not out off 141 balls.

Ohoka, however, on the back of a commanding knock from DJ Lyons chased down the score with six overs and five wickets in hand.

Lyons, batting at three, made short work of the combined side’s bowling, smacking 92 off just 64 balls, including 19 boundaries.

In the other two games of the round, Weedons thumped Oxford-Rangiora-Southbrook by 82 runs, while Sefton dispatched a depleted Leeston-Southbridge by 85 runs.
