BECOMING MORE SOCIAL

-

It was fascinating researching our lead story this issue looking at which leaders and CEOs are on social media and who is not. One wee anecdote I came across was that Warren Buffett has only tweeted nine times but has 1.8 million followers. And according to the Wall Street Journal when he joined in 2013 his first tweet was “Warren is in the house”.

I enjoyed the WSJ’s introduction to their story even more: “Pigs aren’t flying, lambs aren’t lying down with lions, and hell isn’t getting any cooler. But Warren Buffett is joining Twitter.”

As to why many New Zealand CEOs aren’t more active on social media it may well be a lack of time; lack of inclination or perhaps concern about putting themselves out there. But it seems they are missing a real opportunity to position themselves as thought leaders. As our story points out international research is finding that the most influential CEOs today are social leaders, “open to listening, engaging in dialogue with stakeholders and responsive to their followers”.

One CEO we follow is IMNZ’s Fiona Hewitt (@fionahewitt68) who tweets a well balanced and interesting mix of the personal, business inspiration and business leadership. So, to any leaders who are thinking about ramping up your online presence, do let us know and we’ll make sure we follow you too. Have a good month. Kind regards, Annie Gray editor@management.co.nz
