NZ Business + Management

More breakthroughs, please

- Glenn H Baker editor@nzbusiness.co.nz

And so it begins.

2018 could well be a landmark year. Will it be the year when the world’s governments finally get serious about saving the planet? Reversing the damage caused by decades of ignorance.

Has the message got through yet that, yes, humankind has stuffed up big-time, and now we have to put things right? Are we past the point of no return?

New technologies hold so much promise – but it takes decades to adopt new ways of doing things, and time is not on our side.

Growth for growth’s sake needs rethinking – now the focus must be on the circular economy – creating products that have a useful life and a life beyond that use (next month we’re running an excellent piece by the Sustainable Business Network on the subject of the circular economy).

Our cover story this month on the revitalisation of the Christchurch CBD, and some of the businesses brave enough to be part of it, gives us a glimpse of how future cities and businesses may look like. Although it is taking longer than first anticipated, there is much to admire in the planning and foresight that is going into the Christchurch rebuild. And so what does 2018 hold in store for you, as a business owner? Will this be a breakthrough year in terms of developing your business? Will you finally realise your dreams and achieve some truly worthwhile business goals?

If you’re a start-up business you will find our new series ‘From Garage to Global’ by Mark Loveys a useful tool to help you along the way.

Described by the NZ Herald as “New Zealand’s most successful serial software entrepreneur”, Mark was the original developer of Exonet, which was sold to Solution 6, then MYOB, and is now Australasia’s most widely used midrange business software.

Mark also founded Datasquirt and Enprise Group and became CEO of two-yearold online billing portal Datagate in 2015 – which he’s now driving into the North American market. I think you’ll agree that he’s well-qualified to pen the series. Enjoy the read, and here’s wishing you a breakthrough year!
